Two weeks fly by, and before I can fully grasp whatâs about to happen, itâs Friday night and Jimmy and Adelaide are due to arrive. I decide to make tacos for dinner. Itâll keep me in the kitchen on meal prep, which means less time around her.
A knock on the door sounds, and Monicaâs footsteps barreling down the hallway comes next.
âJimmy!â she says right before I step out of the kitchen.
I turn the corner and watch Jimmy pick up Monica. Adelaide's behind him with a strained smile.
âHey, sweetie. How are you?â
âGood. Who are you?â
âManners, Monica,â I say as I walk down the short hallway.
âSorry, Mommy,â she says, her eyes still on Adelaide.
âHello, Adelaide,â I say, hoping thereâs pleasure in my tone. The two of us need to get off on the right foot for Monica.
âLilah.â She nods once and returns her attention to Monica, staring at her as though sheâs inspecting every feature down to her freckles.
I ignore the urge to tear Monica out of Jimmyâs arms, shut and lock the door.
Adelaideâs still as beautiful as ever, though her hair is shorter than when I last saw her. But itâs easy to see why Jimmy would be attracted to her. Sheâs a Hollywood starlet.
âThis is my fiancée, Adelaide,â he says, setting Monica down and stepping to the side to place his hand behind Adelaide.
âWhatâs a fiancée?â she asks with her nose scrunched up in the adorable way she does when she doesnât understand something.
âA fiancée is the person youâre going to marry.â
Monicaâs expression slackens, and she draws back. âWhy would you marry her? Why wouldnât you marry Mommy?â She turns to look at me, and my stomach sinks. âMommies and daddies get married.â
Oh no. We really should have prepped her for this.
âKiddo, Jimmy and I arenât getting married. Heâs marrying Adelaide.â Heat flares in my cheeks at having to say that as if itâs the best thing ever and we should both be over the moon about it. In front of Adelaide no less.
âNo!â She stomps her foot. âI want you and Mommy to get married!â
He glances at me, looking bewildered.
âMonica, thatâs rude. Now say hello to Adelaide.â
âNo!â Before I can stop her, she races down the hallway, tears streaming down her small cheeks.
âIâm sorry,â I say. âI had no idea she felt that way. Sheâs never said anything.â
Adelaideâs lips are pinched tight and her eyes narrowed as if sheâs a witch who's casting a spell for me to disappear.
âSheâs never let on that she thought we were going to get married. I fucked this up.â Jimmy pushes a hand through his hair.
I hold up my hand. âNo, you didnât. Give me a minute. I'll go talk to her.â
âLet me.â He steps forward, silently asking permission.
Technically this is his rodeo, so I step out of the way and nod. Forgetting that leaves me and Adelaide alone in the awkwardness.
I clear my throat. âCan I get you something to drink?â
âIâm good,â she says and steps farther into the house, eyeing every inch.
